Yves Saint Laurent discovered the wonders of Kyoto in 1963. In 1977, he paid homage to imperial China with his runway show Les Chinoises, then five years later he began taking inspiration from India. They visited Tokyo and Kyoto, where they admired the renowned cherry blossoms (sakura) alongside courtesans dressed in gleaming kimonos. The women recalled the polychrome prints in Saint Laurent’s apartment on the Place Vauban. He did not acquire any prints any while in Japan.
